Ramen bowl or Udon bowl - How can you tell?
There are four main characteristics to distinguish ramen from udon bowl.
Size and Depth:
Ramen bowls are typically wide and deep to hold broth, noodles, and toppings comfortably. They usually range from 18-25 cm in diameter.
Udon bowls are often shorter and rounder but still deep enough to accommodate thick noodles and broth. Their diameter is usually 16-22 cm.
Shape:
Ramen bowls usually have a flared or slightly curved rim to help with eating and cooling hot broth. Some also have a footed base for stability.
Udon bowls tend to be more upright with straighter walls, making them ideal for thicker, heavier noodles.
Material & Design:
Ramen bowls are typically made from ceramic or melamine, with a smooth, durable glaze to withstand hot soup.
Udon bowls are often heavier ceramic with traditional blue-and-white patterns or rustic earthy tones.
Usage & Functionality:
Ramen bowls are designed to hold a balance of broth, toppings, and noodles, with enough width to arrange toppings aesthetically.
Udon bowls accommodate thicker noodles and are often used for both hot and cold udon dishes, sometimes featuring a handle for serving cold udon.
